Extracted Development Judges Announcement - DCF24

Get ready to witness talented roasters and baristas in action at Dublin Coffee Festival, where Extracted Development promises an epic showdown on 2nd-3rd March! While the competitor applications are still open, we are very excited to announce the lineup of our expert judges, each bringing their A-game to evaluate the true behind-the-bar skills of our competitors.

Experience Judges

Our Experience Judges will be on stage to witness each team’s performance slot. These are the judges that the competitors will present their customer service and beverages to. They will judge the experience provided by the competitor duos from sensory to the customer service experience.

Julie Murray, the Head of Coffee Culture at Bewley's Ltd., brings over 30 years of experience in coffee, from barista training to roasting and judging at various coffee competitions. Having been on the coffee competition scene since attending the first World Barista Championship in 2000, Julie is set to bring her wealth of knowledge to our Dublin stage.

Maja Rozwadowska, the Head of Coffee and part of the judges' team at SCA Ireland, has a wealth of experience judging national and international coffee competitions. As a judge, Maja's goal is not only to assess and score participants but also to inspire and support their coffee journey, fostering growth and excellence.

Sam Langdon, a coffee enthusiast for over 18 years, has worked at renowned establishments such as Fernandez and Wells, Caravan Coffee Roasters and Raw Material, with expertises spanning from roasting, to sourcing and quality control. Currently working at Sucafina as a coffee trader, Sam is ready to bring his professional insights to the judging panel.

Skills Judges

Our Skills Judges will also be present on stage, verifying the techniques used and consistency between the team members, recording the time competitors take to complete their set and checking the station for cleanliness after the competitors leave to present their beverages - they will judge the hard and soft skills demonstrated by the competitor duos.

Matthew Coade, a seasoned professional, has a dynamic background in the coffee industry, serving as Head Barista, Head Trainer and currently as Account Manager for Badger and Dodo Boutique Coffee Roasters. Having completed all SCA certifications in barista, Matthew has also been a competitor in various coffee competitions and organised the Irish Aeropress Championships last year.

Patrick Abbott, the founder of Monks Coffee Roasters, has been a prominent figure in the specialty coffee scene for over a decade. With experience running a training lab for both professional and home baristas and hosting comprehensive hospitality skills courses, Patrick brings a unique blend of skills to the judging panel.

Mystery Judge

Our Mystery Judge will make incognito visits to competitors during their time on the competition brew bar. Assessing customer service skills beyond the stage pressure, the Mystery Judge will also pose questions related to competitors’ sustainable practices. It’s a chance for competitors to earn up to 20 additional points!

Be a Part of the Judging

As a visitor, you will also have the opportunity to be a part of the judging process. Join us at the competition brew bar, taste the coffee from our competitors and cast your votes! Visitors can score competitor duos based on their coffee and customer service experience. The duo with the highest audience points will win the 'Audience Favourite' award.
